TBQ - Photolytic decomposition
Question:
3
m.
Answer the following:
Why silver chloride cannot be stored in light-colored bottles? Give examples of photolytic decomposition.
Silver chloride is a
photosensitive substance decomposes on heating to form silver and oxygen gas
photosensitive substance, it break down into silver and chlorine gas
photosensitive substance combines with oxygen to produce silver oxide and chlorine gas
photosensitive substance forms silver and hydrogen gas in the presence of light
when exposed to sunlight. Thus, they are stored in dark bottles to prevent exposure to light.
Example:
\(2AgCl → 2Ag + Cl_2\)
\(CuO + H_2 → Cu + H_2O\)
\(HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H_2O\)
\(CaCO_3 → CaO + CO_2\)
and
\(2AgBr → 2Ag + Br_2\)
\(CuO + H_2 → Cu + H_2O\)
\(2Na + Cl_2 → 2NaCl\)
\(Zn + CuSO_4 → ZnSO_4 + Cu\)
