Oxidation and reduction reaction
Question:
5
m.
Answer the following questions briefly:
Explain the following in terms oxidation and reduction with examples.
Oxidation is the process of
adding oxygen to a substance
removing oxygen from a substance
gain of electrons
adding hydrogen
Example:
\(S\)(s) + \(O_2\)(g) → \(SO_2\)(g)
\(ZnO\) + \(C\) → \(Zn\) + \(CO\)
\(CO\) + \(O\) → \(O_2\) + \(CO\)
\(NO\) + \(H_2\) → \(N_2\) + \(OH\)
Reduction is the process of
increase in oxidation number
loss of electrons
removing oxygen from a substance
adding oxygen to a substance
Example:
\(S\)(s) + \(O_2\)(g) → \(SO_2\)(g)
\(NO\) + \(H_2\) → \(N_2\) + \(OH\)
\(CO\) + \(O\) → \(O_2\) + \(CO\)
\(ZnO\) + \(C\) → \(Zn\) + \(CO\)
