Oxidation and reduction reaction
Question:
4
m.
Read the following question and answer:
Analyse the given equation:
\(MnO_2 + 4HCl → MnCl_2 + 2H_2O + Cl_2\)
Identify the oxidising and reducing agents and provide the reason for your answer.
The oxidising agent is
\(MnCl_2\)
\(MnO_2\)
\(HCl\)
\(Cl_2\)
Reason:
Mn is already in +2 state
It is released as a gas
Mn in \(MnO_2\) gains electrons and is reduced to \(Mn^{2+}\)
Cl⁻ loses electrons to form Cl2
The reducing agent is
\(HCl\)
(MnCl_2\)
\(MnO_2\)
\(H_2O\)
Reason:
\(Cl^-\) loses electrons and is oxidised to \(Cl_2\)
Mn in \(MnO_2\) gains electrons and is reduced to \(Mn^{2+}\)
It is released as a gas
Mn is already in +2 state
