Thermite reaction
Question:
3
m.
Answer the following question:
Thermite reaction:
\(Fe_2O_{3(s)} + 2Al_{(s)} \rightarrow\ 2Fe_{(l)} + Al_{2}O_{3(s)} + Heat\)
i. Give reason why the above reaction is known as a thermite reaction.
Because aluminium is less reactive than iron
Because it is a highly exothermic reaction between a metal oxide and a more reactive metal
Because it is a neutralisation reaction
Because it is an endothermic reaction
ii. Give a reason why aluminium is preferably used in thermite reaction.
Aluminium does not react with metal oxides
Aluminium forms a protective layer of iron oxide
Aluminium is less reactive than other metals
Aluminium is highly reactive and reduces metal oxides efficiently
