Answer the
the following question
:
1.
What happens when oxygen reacts with magnesium and sulphur. What are the main differences in the nature of products formed?
i. Reaction of
magnesium
with oxygen:
Forms magnesium oxide which is acidic in nature
Forms magnesium hydride which is acidic in nature
Forms magnesium oxide which is basic in nature
Forms magnesium nitride which is acidic in nature
Reaction:
\(2Mg + O_2 \to 2MgH\)
\(2Mg + H_2 \to 2MgH\)
\(2Mg + N_2 \to 2MgO\)
\(2Mg + O_2 \to 2MgO\)
ii. Reaction of
sulphur
with oxygen:
Forms sulphur hydroxide which is basic in nature
Forms sulphur dioxide which is acidic in nature
Forms sulphur hydroxide which is acidic in nature
Forms sulphur dioxide which is basic in nature
Reaction:
\(S + O_2 \to SCl_2\)
\(S + O_2 \to SO_4\)
\(S + H_2 \to SH_2\)
\(S + O_2 \to SO_2\)
