What is a Parallel Illusion?

A parallel illusion is a type of optical illusion where lines that are actually perfectly parallel look bent, slanted, or not parallel at all. This tricks our eyes and brains into seeing something that isn't really there!

Why Does This Happen?

This illusion happens because of the patterns, colors, or shapes around the lines. Our brains follow those extra shapes or colors, so the real straight lines suddenly look crooked.

Simple Example: The Slanting Lines Illusion

Imagine a picture with lots of black and white blocks, and some straight horizontal lines drawn across them. When you look at it, the lines might look like they're sloping down or curving – but they're actually straight and parallel! This illusion is called the "Cafe Wall Illusion" or "Parallel Lines Illusion."

How To Check If Lines Are Parallel

You can test if they are really parallel by using a ruler or the edge of a piece of paper. Place it next to the line on the screen, and you'll see that the line doesn't bend!

Why Do Our Eyes Get Fooled?

Because our brains try to make sense of complicated patterns, sometimes we see things the way the background wants, not how they truly are. Powerful vertical or slanted lines near the parallel lines confuse our eyes and brain.
